I always thought that Detroit lucked out when it came to sports team names. It seems pretty impressive to me that they have one team called the Lions and another called the Tigers, two of the coolest animals in the animal kingdom. The Lions were originally established as the Portsmouth Spartans and were based in Ohio, joining the NFL in 1930.
In 1934, the team was purchased and moved to Detroit. Comparatively, the Tigers have always been the Tigers, since the team was established in 1894. They are the oldest franchise in the American League to remain in the same city with the same name. So when someone buys a Detroit Tigers tire cover, they’re supporting legacy that’s nearly a hundred and twenty years old.
